How would you finish this statement - I Am ________________ ? What’s the first thing that came to your mind? You may have filled in that blank with your name, or maybe that you're a parent, grandparent or a student or maybe you filled it in with your occupation or another accomplishment. It's interesting how we identify ourselves most often by the roles we fulfill ... what we do or have done.
The way of our culture and society is that we do things to be someone. We perform, serve or work and if we do a good enough job then we are perceived as valuable in the eyes of others and then in our own eyes.
Out of our activity we often form our identity. What we do has led us to who we are - which is incredibly dangerous because eventually that thinking will crush us but more importantly it goes completely against how God see’s us.
A follower of Jesus - a Christian is different ... not better - different. We base our identity not on what we do but on what God has done. We receive a new identity by virtue of Jesus’ life, death and resurrection. This morning we'll talk a little about our Gospel Identity that flows from our relationship with Father, Son and Holy Spirit: we are a Family of Missionary Servants.
