The arrival of Jesus signalled the end of the Religious model of relating to God and the beginning of something revolutionary—an approach to faith characterized by love of others. The Religious model is me-focused, but Jesus’ new covenant calls for a focus on others.
Jesus new command to love - offers us no place to hide. No loopholes, short cuts, or workarounds. Jesus didn’t look for a loophole to loving you or me. So, what is required if we want to follow Jesus’ example and revolutionarily love the people around us? It begins by asking a revolutionary question. Instead of “what’s in it for me?” we ask “what does love require of me?” We almost always know the answer to that question. The hard part is actually doing what love requires because it involves honour and to honour well involves giving something up. It requires self-sacrifice.
