Near the end of the movie "Field of Dreams" the character of Ray Kinsella who has endured ridicule, rejection and financial hardship after plowing under his corn field to build a baseball diamond - responds to his situation by listing all the things he's done, the things he's given up - all without once asking "what's in it for me"... he then proceeds to ask "what's in it for me!"

Most people don’t become Christians in terms of being a Jesus follower.  We become Christians because we were told obedience pays and disobedience doesn’t.  We approach Christianity hoping it will fill a hole in our souls.  That God will fix us or fix someone we know.   We approach Jesus as consumers rather than followers.  It's okay to start there but eventually we'll get to a place where we ask "what's in it for me" as we recognize that our agendas clash with Jesus’ and we have to decide whether we’ll abandon Him or
follow.
